Despite the chilly air in her room, her clothes were damp and heavy with sweat when she opened her eyes. Halifax stared in a daze at the low ceiling, where the blue light of dawn was mounting stronger. Already she was losing hold of the dream, but the remnants she could recall bewildered her. Halifax consorted with the four ghosts often, but only in her visions could she see them clearly. She struggled to ignore the creeping doubt that they really did not exist. Halifax feared herself to be a lunatic. Somehow, though, her figments knew much more than she.
